Magazines

No newspapers or magazines at Bridge Services for about a week in total. And no off licence, either (sorry, Gina). This follows another change of management at Texaco, though I understand it’s still under the ownership of Malthurst Ltd. Strange that a simple business change of this nature should strip out all the news. It didn’t happen at the Castle Bell news agency.

This got me thinking. Where in Rhuthun/Ruthin do you find a specialist magazine, these days? The answer is most likely Bridge Services but, even then, it isn’t what it once was.

Say what you like about the chaotic spread of journals at the former Newyddion Rhuthun News, you did tend to find some real rarities. When Simon migrated from Ruthin News to Bridge Services, he brought the magazine disorder with him but he maintained quite an inventory (even though there were confusingly high numbers of back issues).

What of our current newsagents? The only town centre newsagent, Castle Bell, doesn’t stock a huge range of magazine titles. Yes, you can find Take a Break, the Radio Times, The Lady and What Car? but nothing seems to stray beyond the too popular.

The Co-op’s worse. The smaller Co-op at Llanfwrog has a marginally broader range than its larger sibling. In fact, after Bridge Services, the best selection is actually at Tesco.

The zenith in Rhuthun magazines was pre-Malthurst and pre-Howatson Bridge Services. 15 years ago, you could browse some really eccentric titles at Bridge Services, month in, month out, from the serious to frivolous. Such a shame when that resource vanished.

The current management change at Bridge Services means we say farewell to those who’ve been running it since November 2008. Incredibly polite, hard working and it has to be said fairly numerous, we’ll miss you all and your courtesy… and the Roberts DAB radio playing a fairly esoteric and unusual BBC radio station largely unfamiliar to Rhuthun ears.

And, under your stewardship, you have tidied and regularised the shop. Disappointing was the way you weren’t able to maintain the initially promisingly low price of petrol.

Opposite Bridge Services, we welcome back MDM Resales, as of Saturday, seen here after unloading. They vanished at Christmas and the word on the street seems to be that they’ve had a change of heart.
