G I & M Jones – Newyddion Rhuthun/Ruthin News

Closed on 5 May 2007, this long-standing Well Street newsagent is the latest in a line of paper shops and tobacconists/confectioners to finish. The shop will be remembered for the number of times staff swapped around the interior, the stacked-to-bursting magazine shelves and for its well-known former manager (now at Bridge Services).

The manager was a leading campaigner during the Well Street refurbishment, when shopkeepers complained bitterly of a loss of trade with threats of closure, during the environmental improvements, amazingly ten years ago this month.

Newspaper orders and deliveries have transferred to the only remaining town centre newsagent, Castle Bell of Clwyd Street, though the latter has not taken Newyddion Rhuthun over.

In the last twenty years, newsagents Cronin (Well Street), Combes (Upper Clwyd Street) and Newyddion Rhuthun (Well Street) have all closed, leaving Castle Bell (formerly Williams) (Clwyd Street) as the sole newsagent in the town. There were also once confectioners at (or sort of under) the town hall and Clwyd Street (Trebor Hughes).

Picture: if you care to click on the Newyddion Rhuthun picture, you might just read the Free Press hoarding on door on the right, which reads "Tesco Jobs Offer". The shot was taken in May 2006
