Café Culture

Welcome to Rhuthun’s latest café. Sort of.

Opened over the weekend is the Bridge Services Café, Rhuthun’s only café without tables and chairs. Though the sign in the corner to the right of the tills as you face them clearly says “café”, it’s more a convenience stop-over for hot (and cold) drinks-to-go, to take back to your car. There’s a hot water dispenser, cups and stirrers. And a microwave to heat things up. A bit Heath Robinson, perhaps, and certainly not Costa Coffee, but a service nonetheless.

You have to hand it to the new management at Malthurst Rhuthun Bridge Services. Since the change of management last November, they’ve increased the lighting within the shop, thinned out the gondolas, tied up the magazines, provided more space, mounted signage on the upper walls and made the whole area much more inviting.

The cheap fuel that once looked so promising seems to be a thing of the past, with petrol now at £4.86 and diesel £4.90 per gallon—currently exactly 23p a gallon more expensive than both grades in Yr Wyddgrug/Mold.
