Our Nightspot

We understand that as of yesterday, that well known Rhuthun social whirlpool (or is that cesspool?) The Venue is under new management. It has passed to Birch House building owner Turner Bros, who are landlords for the business suites along the first floor. It seems an unusual departure for a building, letting & residential homes business, one that is outside what might be described as its core business.

Turner Bros has plans for The Venue. Ongoing modifications within will refurbish the club. Clubbers report that this will be a much-needed improvement. The external fabric has already undergone a pleasant transformation.

We further understand that The Venue is also set to become an over-25s’ establishment. This may be much to the relief of residents in Canol y Dre who over the last 15 years have suffered the shouts and whales (and worse) of youngsters, some of whom over the years were clearly under age. For example, a 16- and a 17-year-old from Prestatyn appeared in court earlier this year accused of assault at what one of our local newspapers dignified the club as the “nightspot”. And whatever happened to the proposed Canol y Dre alleygate?

Prior Street residents may well share Canol y Dre’s relief. Prior Street is the route through which clubbers walk on their way from the pubs in town to The Venue. Although there is supposedly an 11 p.m. door policy at The Venue, we do understanhd that this is difficult to enforce and refusals only lead to anti-social behaviour nearby. Clubbers can therefore be seen traversing Prior Street up to 11.30, with The Venue door staff on hand, complete with dog. That The Venue undertakes this on-street check is to the old management’s credit. And, to be fair, The Venue has tightened up considerably in the last few years.

Over the years, The Venue has had quite a tempestuous relationship with the town but it does provide for clubbers’ needs, without their having to travel to Rhyl, Wrexham or Chester (or further). Travelling abroad does have its perils. There were times when the licensing authorities threatened closure and, indeed, the owner almost decided to do so. Judging by youngsters’ comments, they both abhor and appreciate The Venue in equal measure. They’ve had strong opinions about the place in the past but continue to go there. One reason is there’s nowhere else. Another is that everyone else goes. It’s probably not as bad as partygoers make out. Like virtually everything in their home towns, youngsters tend to have a fairly jaundiced view of nightclubs.

Will a socially responsbile over-25 policy be good for business? Probably not, as many current patrons are below that age. Unless by introducing it The Venue can attract the sort of people who tend to be put off by the number of youngsters traditionally within. We wish Turner Bros well.
