Avenues & Alleyways

Through the avenues and alleyways, Where the strong and the quick alone can survive, Look around the jungle, See the rough and tumble, Listen to a squealer cry... theme of cult 1970s TV series The Protectors

I must confess I’d never heard of alley gates till Thursday. An alley gate is a lockable security gate across a footpath, alley or behind a terrace of housing. When locked shut, it can reduce the opportunity for crime or anti-social behaviour or, at least, the fear of anti-social behaviour.

A large council public notice in Thursday’s Free Press starts the consultation on 11 potential public alley gate sites across the county. The council proposes 23 gates in all, in Y Rhyl, Prestatyn, Dinbych—and one gate in one proposed site in Rhuthun.

That’s on the residential side of Canol y Dre, on the through pedestrian route to and from The Venue discotheque on Hen Lôn Parcwr. If the gate goes ahead, the plan is that The Venue will as a condition of its licence secure the gates shut between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. when the disco is open. This should stop Venue-goers making mischief through Canol y Dre and on into town via Prior Street. It may even reduce the number of people who wander through the town. This in turn may reduce the damage we seem to be seeing.

The alley gate is surely most welcome, not least for Canol y Dre who, with the A494 traffic on one flank, a trading estate on another, and The Venue on a third, must have a miserable time, especially at weekends. The pedestrian through route has been the cause of some concern for years.

It will no doubt send those having emerged from the club along Lôn Parcwr, either via Glasdir to the estates behind Denbigh Road, or past Tesco to walk along Station Road. By then, the concentration will have dispersed but it does mean the problem goes elsewhere rather than being thwarted completely, I guess.
