Swanning around Cae Ddol

Just because the leader of Denbighshire county council and I started blogging at about the same time (or in my case, restarted), may I squash any rumours circulating that he and I are one and the same ; )

Blogging is a very intimate thing and if senior North Wales police officers can use it to inject something personal into the hard, cold, clinical world of law enforcement, surely others can do so to engender tolerance and understanding. We should commend anyone in authority who tries to get nearer to the people by whatever means.

Which is why we should also support the council’s Cae Ddol citizen participatory exercise, expressions of interest for which close tomorrow (so it’s not *too* late). Cae Ddol was described recently in the Free Press as Rhuthun’s lungs. Of course, Rhuthun needs no lungs but it does need a recreational focal point, where families & friends can simply enjoy being outside without cars whipping past them.

The participatory exercise gives residents an opportunity both to submit and decide upon how a maximum of £25,000 might be spent there. But the actual selected project matters less than submitting a suggestion and, especially, partaking in the decision-making process. These are surely what count. That it’s being piloted in Rhuthun can only be good for our community.

That said, it’s probably as well people have shelved plans to turn the Cae Ddol lake into a stocked fishery. Aside from the detriment to the lake’s bird life—especially the swans and their growing signets—just who would’ve benefited?

We can’t write a post on Cae Ddol without mentioning the former paddling pool, filled in over the summer. The forlorn looking pool was the proverbial accident waiting to happen. The results of the participatory exercise should now provide Cae Ddol with a permanent, all year round facility to replace an expensive, highly seasonal and less than satisfactory one. The emphasis of the project is to enhance opportunities for play.
