Catching up on Comments

It's been a while since we featured this once-regular feature. Here, we look at just some of the comments received over the last 30 days.

40 Mph

The post on the newly-imposed 40 mph speed limit on the A494 from Rhuthun west to Llanbedr DC drew eight comments. The limit follows the death of a lone motorist and an earlier serious crash between a lorry and car.

Regular commenter Invisus wondered whether the limit would have prevented the lorry crash, said to be travelling at 40 in any case. He also pressed for the once proposed Llanbedr by-pass.

The main post itself asked whether the limit would have prevented the lone driver's death.
An anonymous contributor suggested, "It's the drivers' stupidity that causes fatal crashes on that road, not the road." Another similarly nameless contributor felt that "all we have done is reduced the speed limit for all, including the good drivers."

Two people suggest there should be a change of limit outside the schools, further towards town, rather than, as one put it, on the "only section of road coming out of Rhuthun you can overtake on". The other felt that, "very few drivers observe the speed limit even with the new sign by Brynhyfryd school", adding that in the last 50 years (since a crash involving a schoolboy), "Brynhyfryd has many more pupils, a swimming pool has been built, a nursery school has come into existence, two new housing estates have been built, Rhos street school has a lot more pupils, Ysgol Penbarras has come into being, and now there is a lot more heavy traffic now we have Tesco."

Glasdir

Whatever your views on the Glasdir, whether it's moderate or bad for the town, no one appears to like the apartment blocks at its entrance. We called them 'sentinels'. Others likened them to Glasgow tenements or something from Russia. An anonymous commenter stated that "Everyone will have to suffer these monstrosities for ever and a day…". See also a further post based one of the comments.

Spaven's

The post on the newly opened Spaven's sweetshop drew six comments, including one Spaven's. Promised Zoë, "We shall be open on Sundays as soon as possible". She continued, "we are positive that the majority of people from Ruthin are glad that we have decided to open another branch of Spaven's in Ruthin due to the lack of indoor activities and parties available for families in the area… as well as a place for young people to meet and socialise safely".

The debate about shops for tourists versus those offering every day purchases continued here. An anonymous commenter suggested that Rhuthun did not need more sweet shops, hair dressers, sandwich shops or nic-nac emporia. John, however, felt that Spaven's offered a shop likely to appeal across the generations, and at reasonable prices.

The challenge, though is this: how can bread-and-butter shops compete against Tesco? And if the town doesn't need them, why are Spaven's and Tilly Mint so busy? An anonymous comment arrived on this post yesterday strengthening the view that Rhuthun would make a good destination for tourists and to the benefit of town shops because tourists "wouldn't be tempted by Tesco - they've got plenty of those of their own."

Your Vale

Two people felt that the relaunched Vale Advertiser newspaper, now re-branded Your Vale, was much of a muchness, save for the addition of more colour. The first wondered whether you'd buy the Free Press at 50p or take the freebie. And the other felt the Your Vale website was much improved. A third, whose comment appeared elsewhere, suggested Your Vale had the capacity to increase its advertising space at the expense of editorial.

Possible Withdrawal of Payphones

We loved the solitary commenter who quipped, "Pay phones are like public toilets. You never find one when you need one."

Ysgol Brynhyfryd

Comments on a post on the new adult learning veered towards the state of the campus, including the amount of litter in situ. Said an anonymous contributor, "It's a shame the Brynhyfryd students don't take more pride in their new facilities, as the amount of litter strewn across the site and in particular along the boundary of the car park is appalling."

Other than that, the comments seemed to get slightly out of hand, about the level of Welsh at the school. Perhaps we need to remember that Ysgol Brynhyfryd is, after all, a champion of Welsh culture, heritage and language, reflecting the area it serves.

Little Histories

No one as yet seems to have unravelled the seemingly pointless cartoon that have appeared in the past three editions of the Free Press. Can anyone shed any light on them? Will there be another tomorrow?

Petrol

Said an anonymous commenter, "Will somebody please tell me why these filling stations in Ruthin have to charge so much more for their fuel?" The answer may lie here.

It seems, though, that while Rhuthun's petrol remains higher, the gap is closing as there is a general levelling of prices.

Picture House

It's a while since there were comments on the Picture House but an anonymous one emerged three weeks ago. While impressed by the ambiance and food, the commentor was concerned that there was a "very young child helping behind the bar and two very small children running around the restaurant jumping on the furniture. It didn't look good. I felt as if the owner was treating the restaurant as a living room for her children."
