Supermarkets & Petrol

Even though the planning permission to convert the petrol station and bus garage at Llangollen to 36 McCartney & Stone old persons' flats is still pending, a sign has recently gone up in the petrol forecourt advising all that the facility is to close down.

The reason for the petrol station closure is undoubtedly that a small rural garage can no longer compete with the petrol giants. It's the sort of thing that's replicated all over Britain.

With Sainsbury's and especially Asda and Tesco engaged in a price war, and always keenly priced in any case, it's little wonder that the Llangollen pumps will soon run dry.

Which is it? Another victory for the supermarkets against the smaller firm? A supermarket providing what its customers want? Or consumers taking advantage of and supporting where they know the price is cheapest?

And whatever the reason, what is the effect? No petrol for sale in the Dee Valley.
