40

Presumably in response to the recent early morning one-car fatal crash on the A494 east of Rhuthun, since Tuesday last week the speed limit's been reduced from the national limit to 40mph. This affects about a mile of road, till motorists enter the new 30 zone at Llanbedr DC.

Observations last week indicated that well over half of motorists were ignoring the newly imposed limit.

Early days, perhaps. Or may be they feel that the openness of the straight section is now too restricted. Of course, there were and continue to be times when it's impossible to motor at more than 40 along this road—at and around school times; between say four and seven as inbound traffic gets busy; when behind a lorry; etc. But when traffic was lighter, traffic speeds didn't always reduce the the desired 40. And traffic was overtaking along the straight at far more than 40.

Upon entering Rhuthun, yet more were failing to reduce to 30 mph, even as they passed the new warning sign by Ysgol Brynhyfryd.

The A494 towards Yr Wyddrug/Mold is Rhuthun's most important road. It's the one that links Rhuthun eastwards with Chester and England, and sees significant volumes of traffic (by Rhuthun's standards), including daily commuters. The new 40 zone adds to the recent 30 and 40 zones through Llanbedr and Tan-yr-Unto, and the 40 mph limit at Llanferres.

Update: it transpired that this 40 mph limit was temporary
