Welcome America

A comment yesterday on this blog states that,
"Bro Rhuthun through Visit Wales are hosting seven US travel writers Tuesday and Wednesday so please can everyone smile so that Ruthin gets a good write up. Thanks"
We should take this request very seriously. Wouldn't it be nice to welcome American tourists back to Rhuthun/Ruthin in large number. They were a consistent feature up to and including the 1980s but have tailed off. Foot & mouth in 2000 and 9/11 have no doubt contributed to the decline. But there may be something more fundamental in that Americans may want to go to the big hitting inland resorts such as Windsor, York, Bath & Chester. This bypasses Rhuthun but there's no reason why it should be so. It happened before. It can happen again.

Tourists who chose elsewhere don't know what they're missing. For Rhuthun remains the antithesis of the commercialisation of our towns and cities. Not only does it offer contrast to UK towns & cities, it is also so very different to what Americans might see back home.

Here is an opportunity to see a little of Britain as it was in the 1950s & 1960s, when independent shopkeepers blossomed. But not in a time warp sort of way, not as a museum, but as a living town.

US travel writer Rick Steves seemed to have a minor wobble about the medieval banquet but that's in the past and now corrected. He does still include Rhuthun on his 22 day round Britain tour. He's been a friend of Rhuthun over a number of years. Let's hope we can add seven more this week.
