B5105

It seems the B5105 road between Rhuthun/Ruthin and Cerrigydrudion has its own website. A little odd, perhaps, and there's no doubting the fact that the site's author had his tongue firmly in his cheek.

For example, there's more than a frightening reality to the appeal, "Got a corpse to dispose of or just an old sofa? Why not drop in to the Clocaenog [Forest]… and it'll be 30 years before anyone finds your late loved one".

It makes an off beat passing reference to old fashioned telegraph poles along its length and you get fleeting views of them on the accompanying video that traverses the entire length at a little over 150 mph, only slightly faster than the motorbikes the site doesn't say much about.

For the B5105 is most notorious as one of the area's linear playgrounds for bikers who hurtle themselves and their machines at insane speeds through the road's many twists & turns. There was that infamous crash near Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr in 2003 where an unlicensed biker severed his own head.

Other things the site doesn't much mention about the B5105:
  • At the bends by the Cross Keys, you always seem to find yourself squeezed between the high church wall and a passing L E Jones lorry.
  • Former MP Gareth Thomas lives along its length (not all its length, mind you) and usually at Christmas has a stunning light display.
  • Bod Petrual is said to be the place in Clocaenog Forest where you are most likely to see a red squirrel. Even so, you probably stand more chance of watching Nessie emerge from the nearby lake.
  • The B5105 has shrunk by about ¾ of a mile. From the Cerrig direction, it now finishes at Lôn Fawr where it joins its bigger sister, the A494. The B5105 used to run the entire length of Mwrog Street, along Park Road & Station Road to Wernfechan. This was when the A494 went through Well Street, the Square and, believe it or not, Castle Street.
Anyone like to suggest other routes for similar treatment? What about the B5429 at the foothills of the Clwydian Range from Llanelidan to Rhuddlan.
