Pop Up

This is not quite Rhuthun’s first “pop-up” store, but one of the first. I’m referring to the shop now occupying most of the former Majestic Travel, known as Ruthin Trader, that opened a week ago. Another empty shop taken. Though the big question is, for how long.

A pop-up store is jargon for a 21st century trend in retail, a shop that deliberately has a short life and lease, popping up as if from nowhere and then disappearing in a planned fashion. Now’s a good time to do this sort of thing, with Christmas in Rhuthun but 64 days away, though it’s reported that the shop, in spite of its Christmas window, has a longer lease than that. Such pop-up spontaneity occurred with the week-long art sale at the refurbished former Banton optician in December 2007, the appearance (twice, in different units) of a clothes discounter in Clwyd Street, and week-long charity shops at the old Co-op (currently the Creative Image extension) and where Pass it On once was.

Ruthin Trader unashamedly sells end-of-line high street products at reduced prices and is perhaps rather akin to a pound shop, except the low prices within aren’t quite *that* low. A market stall type of approach, perhaps, and literally on the market place (St Peter’s Square).

Take a look in its front window and it appears very seasonal. One wonders how this can be end-of-line when most of us haven’t yet got over our summer holidays. Except that it’s probably last year’s unwanted stock. An opportunity for a very good deal then, as shoppers at Bargeinion B ac M/B & M Bargains will already know. Ruthin Trader’s nearest competitor is in fact the cut-price department store B & M on Station Road. The recession means that there is a renewed interest in shops such as these.

And the charity shop once reported as ready to occupy the remaining quarter of the Majestic Travel building? We’ve heard that this has fallen through and the unit is still available.
