Christmas Cometh

Still over 70 days till Christmas and this week, they’ve put Rhuthun’s Christmas lights up. Such a move so early in the season is unprecedented, certainly in recent times (when everything has appeared to be slightly rushed). That’s one whole month earlier than last year, which is a good sign (though, of course, the lights on the Square have been on all year). Then, the lights were new, and upon switch-on were greeted with enthusiasm from the town and its traders. This year, they’re the same ones, as the town council is renting over a several years.

If you think this is too early, Tesco has been stocking Christmas goodies since about 14th September. Fair enough. Mr Kipling’s exceedingly good mince pies, in packs of six, occupy the top shelf on your left as you enter. Unlike the cakes, chocolates and other Christmas fare now appearing in store, mince pies don’t actually keep. Tesco’s first batch have an end date of 28th October! This is 58 days ahead of the big day, and you need to gobble these up even before Advent. How bazaar though it was ever thus.

I did take a look around Tesco yesterday to see if I could find any hot cross buns or creme eggs. I would’ve loved to report their presence but, unfortunately, cannot. Nonetheless, may I wish everyone a Happy Easter : )
