Our Charity Shops

You’d expect charity shops to be booming during our recession. So it is that over the summer, a fourth Rhuthun charity shop opened in the shape of the brightly lit windows of Capricorn Animal Rescue, Clwyd Street, an organisation based at Yr Wyddgrug/Mold and in Penarlâg/Hawarden. Indeed, the windows are so well lit, set off against the black frontage, they put other, commercial establishments to shame. The shop is part managed by one Avril Clements, who many in Rhuthun will know.

With Capricorn, that’s an increase in capacity of approximately one-third. There’s news that another as yet unnamed charity shop may open shortly, in part of what has become a bit of a longstanding empty property once occupied by Majestic Travel, St Peter’s Square. If so, capacity will increase in the charity shop sector by two thirds. Majestic closed some 18 months ago.

It’s tempting to remark with a sigh that we don’t need *another* charity shop. It’s tempting to remark with a groan that the charity shops once confined to Well Street and Clwyd Street are now invading the town’s prime site, the Square. Instead, though, let’s be thankful that a gap in the streetscape should closed, even if the main part of Majestic Travel remains unoccupied: the charity shop will form the portion behind Majestic’s protruding sort-of portico.

Balancing that, over the weekend, Rhuthun’s longest-established charity shop actually closed, albeit temporarily. This is the Children’s Society at the top of Clwyd Street, near enough adjacent to Exemewe House (Barclay’s Bank). This had a reasonable floor area. Of course, the Children’s Society may just end up at Majestic Travel though from what we’ve heard we think this unlikely... unless you know differently.

What in actual fact is happening is that the shop is being refurbished at a cost of about £30,000 and should re-open within a month.

Children’s Society, Clwyd Street, Rhuthun’s longest established and occupying the premises once used by Family Fashions. Currently closed, to re-open within a month.

Sue Ryder palliative care, near Crown House, Well Street, in recent times a bakery and café.

St Kentigern hospice & palliative care, Tudor House, Well Street, formerly Tudor House Fashions

Capricorn Animal Rescue, Clwyd Street, occupying premises that have seen a large churn, including Ragazzi/Fever/Project 2 and, as temporary lets, Discount Designerwear & FUW

Unnamed charity shop, St Peter’s Square, believed to open in part of the former Majestic Travel building

Plus short term lets in the old Co-op (now part of an enlarged Creative Image) and Pass it On
