About This Website

Rhuthun/Ruthin Blog 2005—2015
This blog started as a means of trying to measure and record the way in which the small North Wales market town of Rhuthun/Ruthin would change and subsequently has changed, since the arrival of Tesco.

Subsequently, the Rhuthun/Ruthin Blog has broadened to encompass other changes in the town, good and bad. It has now become something of a log or archive for the area, again good and bad, since February 2005.

Once a major retailer, Tesco's power has much diminished. No longer does the blog therefore merely try to document the effect a development such as Tesco is having on the town. It tries to reflect the issues that Rhuthun faces. It tries both to describe and to explain some of these changes. Believe me, there have been many. It's a sort of up-to-date yet historical project... chronicling developments but with some speculation. Ideal blog material, in fact. It may be something of a cliché but blogging such as this is very much at the cutting edge of history, recording things as they develop, though we recognise that other social media tools now perform this task.

Returning to its original intent, this site eventually should be able to answer the question "What is the future of Rhuthun/Ruthin, in Tesco's hands?"

The blog was publicly accessible from its inception to 2011. Thereafter, it was open to invited readers only, with a view, one day, to restoring public access.

In the meantime, we use English as the primary language for the site. This is a practical approach that we trust does not diminish the standing of Yr Iaith Gymraeg within Rhuthun's community. Nearly half of us communicate yn y Gymraeg. We have generally adopted the Welsh rather than the English spelling of the town—Rhuthun.

Finally, we strive for balance in all things. Where possible, we aim to reflect both sides of any argument. Please therefore note that the author of this site is neither for nor against a Tesco or similar developments in Rhuthun. We have undertaken a number of reader surveys that demonstrate that, broadly, we achieve the goal of impartiality. This does not mean every reader believes the blog is unbiased.
