About Rhuthun/Ruthin

This blog started as a way of trying to measure and record the way in which the small market town of Rhuthun/Ruthin would change and subsequently has changed, since Tesco. At the time this blog began, Tesco was a major force in retail. That position has subsequently declined.

It subsequently broadened to consider the peculiarities, the niceties and the niggles associated with the own.

Rhuthun (Welsh) or Ruthin (English) is the county town of Denbighshire in North East Wales, UK. With an estimated settlement population of 5,300 (2005) 5,700 (2021), Rhuthun/Ruthin is a small market town, also serving the scattered rural hinterland of the fertile southern Vale of Clwyd and adjacent upland hill country. The population including the town's hinterland is approximately £13,500.

It is said to be a prosperous town. People want to live here, reflected in higher housing costs than adjacent towns. It boasts a well perceived state secondary school.

The old town, around the Castle and St Peter's Square, is picturesquely located at the top of a hill. Other than the county council, there is no major employer in the area. However, farming is strong.

Rhuthun/Ruthin is within daily commuting distance of Chester and Wrexham and just about to Liverpool and Manchester.

The average gross annual earnings in Ruthin are estimated at £19,314 (2005), £33,350 VIEW SOURCE (2021)  with an unemployment rate of 3.2% (2005) 2.8% VIEW SOURCE (2021)

Aside from Boots the Chemist, three supermarkets (Aldi, Co-op, KwikSave, Somerfield, Tesco), two no wine merchants, a discount retailer (B & M Bargains) and three one clearing bank, the large variety of shops in the town are independently owned and run.
