Key Results—2011 Survey

There'll be one person who won't be happy with this post: in answering the blog survey, she wrote, "I'm not interested in diagrams and analysis and surveys".

It's these written responses to the 2011 Reader Survey that are the most interesting but, for now, here's a brief analysis of three key questions, with apologies to the person mentioned above.

What really surprised me was that although the same percentage of respondents in 2011 & 2010 stated that they visited the blog three/four times a week, the respondents who stated that they came here daily had risen from 14 to 42 per cent. There was a corresponding reduction in the number who in 2011 visited weekly or occasionally.

And, again comparing 2011 with 2010, the respondents who felt that the blog was "excellent" had increased from 35 to 42 per cent. Given some of the recent feedback via comments, I had not bargained for such a positive change. I was expecting the reverse. Mind you, the percentage who responded that the blog was "fair" had increased by a higher proportion.

Finally, and this is the item that is of most interest to me, I asked whether people felt that the blog was balanced and impartial. I do strive for this and this is a key indicator. The number of respondents in 2010 & 2011 who felt that the blog was "Always impartial & balanced" had increased from 16 to 23 per cent. Again, I was expecting a reversal. Balancing this, the number of respondents who felt that the blog was "Usually balanced" reduced from 77 to 72 per cent.

Before you feel that I am blowing my own trumpet too much, the written comments were largely positive but not always. Just under two thirds of respondents were good enough to write something. More on this on another day. As well as reaction to blog moderation.
