In the Pink. Or is this not so Healthily?

First purple, now pink. Some time between Tuesday morning and Friday morning, the former Montecito has gone pink. Very pink. A kind of Barbie pink. Perhaps the choice was inspired by the very fashionable film in cinemas right now.

The Montecito building now looks clean and tidy. It needed the investment and we should be thankful for that. But can such a colour ever be countenanced on the jewel in Rhuthun/Ruthin's crown, the Square? The same Square that is the heart of our conservation area? Or is it sober enough to blend in?

This isn't Rhuthun on Sea. We're not at the beachside (though our gulls shout out a different story). As such, virtually all of our high street buildings are toned down. The recent Parry repaint, for example, is Crown Cottage, Well Street, in a fetching ochre, above. Crown Cottage's frontage is rather similar to Montecito's.

Pre-pink, the Montecito building was more in-keeping. Notice the blue licensing notice in the window to the left of the door. It's in the name of newly-formed IRM Hospitality Services Ltd. We think IRM stands for Small Plates' Imogen & Rowen, and G Parry's Mike. We assume it's pronounced as a hesitant 'erm'.

There will no doubt be supporters of the colour in just the same way there will be those who think it's an affront. The arguments either way are perhaps similar to the infamous 'purple shop' of a dozen or so years ago.

Back then, the purple shop closed soon after it was opened. We don't want to see a business fail (before it starts) and, let's face it, it's unlikely to, but we do wonder whether the colour is just too 'outstanding' amid your subtle greys and muted yellows. Though I bet we shall get used to it soon enough. And it really isn't as garish as the purple shop. What's wrong with a delicate splash of colour?

The nearest think to pink is this recent repaint in Record Street, all but covered in ivy
