Confused? You Could Be

It's Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. at the Market Street approach to St Peter's Square roundabout.

It must be a visitor and his family's car, hesitating a little too long. Joining him at the rear is a Denbighshire county council minibus and driver. The stickers on the side indicate he comes from some work in Llangollen. The Denbighshire driver is impatient and doesn't like the wait. He blasts his horn and then angrily waves out of the cab window in a 'get a move on' gesture. I doubt the visitor and his family hears the Denbighshire driver's urging remarks. Just as well.

In the eyes of our visiting family, not only does this give a bad impression of Denbighshire. It is also a little ironic. For it is Denbighshire which is responsible for what, let's face it, is a confusing roundabout. Little wonder the visitor hesitates.

I am not saying that there's a safety problem. It's understandable, though, that first time users are cautious.

On approach to the roundabout from Market Street, the unfamiliar driver is faced with a sea of open tarmac. The visibility is poor, thanks to buildings left and cars parked right. Moreover, Market Street has a double pecked line as if it were a give way marking. So, do normal roundabout rules apply or is there any traffic from left as well as right? Do you give way to traffic on the left as well as the right? Ditto nearing the roundabout from Clwyd Street. All other entries have a typical roundabout single pecked line.

Under Levelling Up, the sooner that roundabout goes the better. That way, the county council's drivers can keep calm. We only have their wellbeing at heart.
