Zeroing in on Poor Hygiene

Some news regarding food hygiene. Welcome hot food takeaway, Borthyn, as at June 2023 was 1/5 but last month regained its status as a full 5/5. That's quite a leap. Carniboar, Upper Clwyd Street, also 1/5, has improved albeit less spectacularly to a reasonable 3/5.

That's the good news.

Leonardo's, Well Street, and the White Horse, Llanfair, are still shown as 0/5. Leonardo's did once reach 5/5 but since 2019 has been 1/5 or less. For a longer period, the White Horse made 5/5 but is now back to its starter position of 0/5 when food hygiene ratings began

Denbighshire has 1,065 rated businesses. Two of the four in the county at 0/5 are in or near Rhuthun/Ruthin.

The following have a poor 1/5 rating: Chain & Sprocket (Lôn Parcwr), Ruthin Tandoori (Wynnstay Road) and Himalaya (Well Street).

So, too, does the joint businesses Small Plates (Well Street) and The Sorbus Tree (Hen Lôn Parcwr). Both score 1/5. The Sorbus Tree closed its ready meal business at the beginning of 2023 but still prepares food off-site for Small Plates. Small Plates has protested at its rating. The owners are about to embark on new businesses, at the Myd and Montecito. As a result, will their scores improve?

Ratings at schools tend to be at the 5/5 mark but Munchins at Ysgol Llanbedr manages just 1/5.

Clwyd Street's The Boar’s Head (5/5) is closed till September 1st when its new tenants take over (missing the lucrative late summer bank holiday weekend!). It was temporarily re-opened but closed again and the former manager is reported to be running the new name for Kaffe Haus (St Peter's Square). When the Kaffe Haus was assessed in September 2022, it scored 2/5. This may not reflect the current management. Aramak at Coleg Llysfasi also manages a mere 2/5.

As for scores beyond 2/5, we shan't go on other than to mention four new businesses.

First, there's the Market Hall. This serves vittles and beverages from the rear. They score 5/5.

The other three are all 3/5 thus 'generally satisfactory'. This could be seen as perhaps a little disappointing because, starting afresh, they had an opportunity to do so much better. One is RMS Retail, Well Street. This is a convenience store and most of its comestibles come pre-packaged. Then there's Becws Islyn, also scoring 3/5. This is an incredibly popular bakery and much of its foodstuffs are open and not packaged before sale. The final new business at 3/5 is Seconds café, Well Street, which specialises in food that is near its sell by or use by dates.

The average food rating score as at August 2023 in the Rhuthun area is 4.2/5.
