Costa Imposter?

When Denbighshire Leisure Ltd closed Café Rh/R for refurbishment (or, rather, it didn't reopen when the Craft Centre did) there was soon talk in town that it would be transformed into a Costa Café. The word from DLL was simply that the reworking would be 'exciting'. As regards a possible second Costa, no one had anything good to say about that. For example, it didn't fit the profile of the Craft Centre (they were probably right). It would cheapen this premier attraction (probably right). It may as well be a McDonald's (now that *would* be a draw! For all the wrong reasons).

Yet, Costa Coffee is so very popular.

Whether DLL listened or whether a Costa was really an option we don't know. But the soon-to-open refurbished café isn't branded as Costa at all but it will serve Costa's brand. Maybe that's the compromise. So it is that we welcome the serving of Britain's favourite coffee brand, alongside our existing Costa Coffee shop, the Co-op and Bridge Services.

The internal refurb looks good, even if, in fact, it does nod towards Costa or Nero or Starbucks. But, that's not a bad thing: it's what people want and, indeed, expect. The cottagey Siop Nain café-effect no longer cuts the ham sandwich-and-mustard.

Beiges, browns and greys plus breakfast bar seating: all very on today's message. This has elements of Costa Coffee shops but we are assured Café Rh/R will employ a chef

One thing, though. The refurbishment seems to have dispensed with the pleasing and arty black & white pictures of Rhuthun/Ruthin previously lining the Café Rh/R's walls. These were designed to elicit an interest in town. We're not sure they did but they were art in their own right. We do hope they haven't been thrown out into a skip.
