Gentlemen's barbers in Rhuthun/Ruthin have recently proliferated. Joining Lox Box, Cutting Corner and J's was Lads & Dads and, during the summer, a Turkish barber on Well Street, Rhuthun's first. There's no denying that the Turkish barber is as popular in Rhuthun as they seem to be elsewhere. Next and finally came Kave of Yr Wyddgrug/Mold, which opened up in the former longstanding Alison's Beauty which, before becoming empty, had been a sandwich shop.
So, where Rhuthun once had three, at Christmas it boasted five.
Kave didn't last long. It closed because it couldn't find a barber to work there. But immediately after Christmas, long-standing J's of Clwyd Street also closed. Was this because Rhuthun now has an over-supply of barbers?
J's was successor to the very long-standing and rather traditional John the Barbers, who used to operate from a semi-basement in Upper Clwyd Street. J's took over but eventually moved to better, more suitable premises.
All that's left of J's is a number of portraits, fading just like J's itself will
