Changing Scene

At midnight on new year's eve, St Peter's Square was once *the* place to be. Now, its but a shadow of its former self. And last night was mild and dry: a perfect evening for a gathering on the Square. Where was everyone?Or, perhaps, it was so clement that more people decided to walk up Moel Famau to watch the fireworks in the Vale.

Not that the Square was empty, you understand. But numbers were down even on three years ago. And, the demographic distribution has noticeably changed, as well. Obviously, midnight on new year's eve will always tend to attract a younger element. In the recent past, however, there's been much more of a balance between the ages. Last night, middle aged and older people were heavily outnumbered by the youngsters and it seems that it is the older generations which have reduced much more than the younger ones. At 11.45pm, the Square was moderately busy with 14-year-olds in such a high proportion to older people that anyone over 21 was simply uncomfortable being there.

Go back even three years and there wouldn't've been these gaps at midnight

Matters did readjust somewhat the nearer we got to midnight but it seemed that most older people decided to opt for Jools Hollands's Hootenanny.
