In Passing—June 2017

Minor roadworks at the junction of Well Street and Wynnstay Road on June 27th 2017 resulted in this temporary no entry sign to compensate for ambiguity in the English, with the removal of the word "No".

The mended fences at Glasdir in February 2016 are now slowly slipping back into the gaps we had previously seen, with planks missing. What happens to them? Is someone preparing for winter? Perhaps it's reminiscent of post-war continental Europe where any public wood would be used to stoke fires.

The Rhuthun/Ruthin mission area (town and immediate country Anglican churches), having appointed an administrator in April 2017, is undergoing from May 2017 changes at the range of buildings behind St Peter's. This includes a new office and some external work as well, as exemplified by the stripped down unusual doorway.

Rather unexpectedly, two shops have opened in Upper Clwyd Street. The most out-of-the-blue is a pet food shop by the name of Jus4Paws (top). It's under the cellar of Gail's once occupied by a jeweller and, after a gap, by J's Barbers' women's section. Though encouraging to see this unit back in use at last, the prognosis surely cannot be good. Next door and having opened earlier this month is Nature's Treasure, late of The Machine, Well Street.

It is with regret that during May & June, Hothe Fine Furniture & Kitchens has gradually run down its showroom on Clwyd Street, to the point, below, at the end of June where it was stripping out its display units.

It would appear that Llyr Gruffydd's offices at the foot of Clwyd Street are on the market and we can only assume that these are shortly to be vacated.

Meanwhile, further up, it seems that the vacant therapy unit is being fitted out for some other as yet undefined use.

Work is progressing well on the former garage on Prior Street now being converted into a dwelling.

The builders have been in to builders' merchants Richard Williams, Park Road, open at the end of April, There's a new entrance, change of layout for the till counter and a new mezzanine. It looks airier and lighter inside, too. In spite of strong competition from Huws Grey, Richard Williams always seems to be the busier.

As previously mentioned, I'r Dim Ltd, operators of Rhuthun's post office, expects to take over the Dinbych branch. Previously, the plan had been to close the building and relocate the service to another, established, existing business.

After about four weeks, mid-June saw the filling in of the collapsed hole that had developed behind the Nat West bank and the new Creative Image. It had previously languished unreported with a traffic cone atop it.

Following the collapse of GHA Coaches Ltd in July 2016, there's a new operator for the Route 76 Vale Ale Trail which links 10 public houses and is said to be more valuable to victuallers in a single day than the Christmas and new year period. Signs are up now for July 8th. The new bus provider is Llew Jones Coaches Ltd, who undertook the Flintshire event which drew criticism for leaving a large number of patrons stranded. The Route 76 press advert states they will be "supplying enough buses for the day". Meanwhile, the me-too event between Ruthun and Cerrigydrudion was operated by Williams of Bala Ltd.

Enjoying a summer paint-up are these two prominent buildings, on on Castle and the other Record Street...

... as has Ruthin wholefoods.

It would appear that someone called Mr Wheely Shine is preparing to occupy part of Castle Mews, following the collapse of the pole dance studio earlier this year (which arrived in September 2015). Mr Wheely Shine is something to do with property maintenance. Time will tell whether he has found a niche.

Following the closure in December 2016 of Bijou owing to ill health, the4 dress agency has re-opened, this time with a grey rather than wood façade.

Renovations are under way as residential premises on Clwyd Street.

The town council has planted the raised border at the junction of Borthyn and Park Road.
