Looking Ahead

The timetable for next weekend's Medieval World & Country Show has recently found its way online.

They've omitted the parallel St Peter's 700 anniversary celebration from I think 10.15 a.m. at the former Garrison Chapel at the Mill, on the 27th. Here will be a collection of civic and town organisation representatives walking up Clwyd Street to the church.

The show organisers will have no real idea of how many spectators they might expect. It's the first venture of this kind. The other unknown is how many will find their way into Rhuthun, for the event is designed to publicise the town. Or how many will simply chose Tesco for a sandwich or snack.

Regrettably what we won't be seeing, unlike when the Sealed Knot arrived in 2007, is a parade of medievally dressed people through town as part of the re-enactment of the Siege of Rhuthun/Ruthin. Of all the events in recent years, that was without doubt the most stirring and impressive. They said they'd come back in 2009 but they never did.

One event worth watching is billed as the "spectacular" burning of Rhuthun/Ruthin at 7 p.m. on Saturday and 4.30 p.m. on Sunday. Tough historians now believe the evidence for this is tenuous, it's within our collective historical memory.

On behalf of Ymlaen Rhuthun Forward I would urge all locals to support this event in order to help defray costs and support those of us in the community actually trying to tackle the problems we as a town face by doing something positive.

Reports on the Sealed Knot are here, here and here with some rather nice photography.
