A Different Parking Issue

Even with the A level exams finishing (or finished?) at the moment, the two estates nearest to Ysgol Brynhyfryd—Bryn Eryl & Parc Brynhyfryd—are continuing to suffer from 17 and 18 year olds who are parking their cars close to school and walking. It seems that the school has banned sixth formers from parking within, either because of a lack of space or health & safety concerns (or both). This results in cars abandoned at the estate entrances and sometimes well within them.

Can the school ban these people's cars? Yes, it can. It's private property and it can manage parking as it chooses. In doing what it's done, it does have an impact on its neighbours, though.

Can the residents of Parc Brynhyfryd & Bryn Eryl complain? Yes, they can. They can voice their concerns but since the cars are parked quite legally on the highway, there's nothing that the traffic wardens can do. People hate others parking outside their houses. It must be galling to have a string of cars parked outside from a little before 9 a.m. and 3.30 p.m.

Residents received a letter yesterday referring to pending talks with the school. But there are no easy solutions.

One is to extend the car park at Brynhyfryd. But why spend taxpayers' money in doing that? And would this solve any internal concerns regarding safety?

The easiest would be to get a can of paint and double yellow line the areas affected. Forcing them to park much further from school would nicely act as a deterrent because you have to question why young people need to drive in the first place. It's their environment, their future, they're helping to destroy. No one in town is more than about 20 minutes' walk from Ysgol Brynhyfryd and pupils up to the age of 17 have to walk in any case.

For others living in villages, the majority at the school no doubt, correct me if I'm wrong but all these young people still get free school transport as of right, don't they? Judging by the significant number of coaches and buses travelling along Mold Road each morning and afternoon they do. Why spend money on fuel when you already have this free benefit?
