Miscellany

Snow’s been lying on the hills above Rhuthun/Ruthin for exactly two months now, as of today. Not much left, it has to be said, as of yesterday but still some strips in the gorse hollows of Bryniau Clwyd/Clwydian Range. This is the longest lying snow for many a year. There was a smattering of new snow on the tops on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings but earlier snow in the week soon vanished to the east, though it lingered a little to the west. More snow forecast especially Saturday night and Sunday.

They’re back. After a gap of 3½ weeks, magazines have reappeared at Bridge Services. Newspapers re-emerged earlier, at the weekend. The bonanza at the other news outlets is over. Or is it? The range of Bridge Services titles has taken another dive.

You pay bills, car tax and all those horrible things online, these days. No one uses the post office any more, right? The arrival in Rhuthun’s post office of a video advertising screen (it has to be said about 20 years after they appeared more widely elsewhere) would indicate that the post office isn’t quite dead yet. Perhaps numbers transferring from last summer’s closed Llanfwrog post office have given the St Peter’s Square branch a fillip. The equipment’s staging local adverts, too.

Annie’s now gives out a useful calendar to indicate when the former W I Market trader and B & B host is taking holidays. Rather unusually, the tea rooms are open this half-term week. We’ve said it before: in spite of the number of times the café’s shut, it’s still impossible to find an unbooked table at lunchtime, such is the quality of the home baking. She must be doing something right. Other than a small A board by the Pryce Memorial, has anyone ever seen Annie’s advertising? Her calendar gives no indication that the shop’s closed on Mondays, though. She used her autumn/winter break to refurbish & redecorate the tea rooms.

The scaffolding outside the former Carpedi Rhuthun Carpets has been an indication of refurbishment. Now, the empty premises are about to see an upgrade and will thereafter be available for rent as a lock up shop. Given the economic conditions, perhaps not the best time to offer such premises but anything’s preferable to the state of the building at present. What about the unit next door up Well Street, though?

A notice has appeared in Edenbloom’s window asking people whether they would like to join an evening flower club. These sorts of things are usually reserved for well meaning amateurs rather than professionals.

Spread Eagle Books is closed from 16-26th February.
