Lunch Food Miscellany

Talking of lunchtime eating, as we have recently, does anyone miss Porth y Dŵr Tearooms (Watergate)? This re-opened under new ownership over the summer, after a hesitant time when it was closed, opened briefly and then closed again. You could enjoy a sandwich, toasted or otherwise, for around £3.50. It was well presented and, in particular, we’d recommend the bread.

Except the place now is shut again.

Porth y Dŵr used bread from Popty’r Eryr, the Eagle’s Bakery, off Clwyd Street. It’s not alone in Rhuthun, as Nancherrow and the Picture House also do, I believe.

Is this the finest bread in Rhuthun? It could be. Annie of Annie’s Café bakes her own bread and this, too, has a refreshingly bread like, non-rubbery and wholesome taste to it. The problem with Annie’s is that unless you book, you don’t get seated: the former bed & breakfast and WI Market trader is very popular as she makes her own everything. And this from a café that closes quite often for several week’s worth of holidays, absences that would otherwise destroy any ‘normal’ business.

Back to the Eagles. Leonardo’s re-launched the honey bun at September 2007’s Produce Market. It’s also been made at Popty’r Eryr for some while, too. The last time we tried, both had slightly different flavours and both represent something a little different to Mr Kipling’s mass produced cakes, no matter how “exceedingly good” Rank Hovis McDougall tell us the fictional Mr Kipling may (or may not) be.

As for Leonardo’s, its lunchtime popularity continues and this may account for a further subtle change within, to accommodate sandwich requisitions. Or is this a sign of the recessionary times? The counter area’s recently been moved outwards, which shrinks the public area of the shop. This is the second time Leonardo’s has got smaller. As a result of both changes, stock is reduced.
