Tilly Mint

Opened on Saturday was Tilly Mint Vintage Collectables, in the former vacant Pam’s Pantry on Clwyd Street.

A cursory look inside indicates that this shop is a useful addition to Rhuthun’s retailers. It’s well laid out and its stock of memorabilia and collectables suits the heavily timbered premises. In fact, the shop’s an absolute delight.

It isn’t quite an antiques shop—so bartering’s probably out of the question. Neither is it bric-a-brac, because the items for sale are all very elegant and unusual, or so its seems to the untrained eye. It also sells some modern pieces, especially glassware. It therefore doesn’t really compete with Rhuthun’s only remaining antiques/bric-a-brac outlet, Steptoe’s.

Tilly Mint is an unusual name. It’s apparently a Liverpudlian term of endearment, as for a child. Though this is perhaps strange for a shop in Rhuthun, we understand that the proprietor’s originally from the town and currently lives near Yr Wyddgrug/Mold.

In the age of eBay, this venture’s a risky one but it’s also fresh, interesting and unique to Rhuthun. We trust its good name will build up and thereby attract repeat visits to the town.
