That’s Politics

It’s not often that you hear Rhuthun mentioned nationally at the top of political news. Now that the election is behind us, I feel I can mention something that many outside politics, the many less politically active, found amusing – and something that caught the eye of the nation. That is, the late appearance outside former member of the UK parliament Gareth Thomas’ Rhuthun house of a Plaid Cymru campaign board.

Speaking this week under the full glare of the television, Gareth Thomas, who as a Labour MP represented Clwyd West (inlcuding Rhuthun) in Westminster till losing to Conservative David Jones by 133 votes in 2005, said he would split his vote between constituency incumbent Labour’s Alun Pugh and Plaid Cymru on the political list. This was in an attempt to see Dafydd Wigley return to the assembly, second on Plaid Cymru’s list.

In the event, the people elected neither sitting Pugh nor hopeful-of-return Wigley. As first on Plaid’s political list, former Rhuthun councillour and Rhuthun resident Janet Ryder was re-elected.
