Speed

Cyngor Tref Rhuthun is suggesting a 20-mph speed limit for motor vehicles travelling through the town.

We’d say that at busy periods, speed is self-limiting, when it becomes impossible to “speed” through the town. This is because of the nature of the roads themselves, the number of parked delivery vehicles, the volume of traffic and pedestrians all coupled with the two deliberate ‘give way’ throttles in Clwyd Street. A 20-mph system would therefore seem superfluous.

Speed becomes more of an issue after hours when the town can be the subject of so-called ‘boy racers’ whose less-than-responsible attitude to speed can endanger their pub-going peers and others thronging the streets. Even then, a speed of 20 mph can only work if it’s enforceable. And the police seem stretched in the evening in south Denbighshire, not that Rhuthun town’s on an enforceable Arrive Alive route.

Perhaps the answer is to have a few more of the Clwyd Street ‘throttles’ that force motorists to give way. These don’t need a police presence. Unpopular is how most motorists described them when they popped-up some 10 years ago. Yet, they’ve stood the test of time. We’ve all gotten used to them and they do their job. Two more (in Well Street) might be worthwhile. Might the townscape look better with them than ugly speed humps?

And another answer is to cut through traffic. That between Denbigh and Yr Wyddgrug/Mold is less likely to pass through the town but those travelling the A494 between Yr Wyddgrug and y Bala may be tempted. Town centre traffic could perhaps be restricted to deliveries and those using the car parks, if this is feasible.
