Over-supply?

We’ve wondered for a while whether perhaps there’s an oversupply of tea-shops in Rhuthun. It comes as no surprise, then, to see that Porth-y- Dŵr (bottom Clwyd Street) is up for sale.

Porth-y- Dŵr tea-shop opened on or around the time of Y Carchar Rhuthun/Ruthin Gaol and is ideally sited for visitors. Perhaps the smaller-than-expected numbers touring the Gaol have had an impact on Porth-y- Dŵr though from purely empirical observations, the café does quite well.

The grade II* listed building has been carefully restored, exposing a wealth of original timbers, floor boarding and panelling. Much of this would have been after the 2000 flood, when the former antiques business (Davies) closed.

From memory, there are currently 13 cafés in Rhuthun, plus places such as the Manorhaus and the Castle Hotel serving daytime coffee and food. Ty Goron/Crown House, Annie’s and Nelson’s are all relatively new. Y Felin Coffi/The Coffee Mill has recently changed hands. Tanzaro’s (also Clwyd Street) recently closed, though continues to trade on the Lôn Parcwr industrial estate.

(Historical note: the Davies antiques business was never the most accessible, patrons being required to ring a bell for admittance. The shop was the worst hit business premises in the town floods of 2000. There followed considerable internal changes. The site laid empty for a while before passing to the current owners).
