Giving it Up

A letter in yesterday’s Independent newspaper from someone in Hampshire, England says that, “Our family has given up supermarkets during Lent for the past 15 years or so. It has become much harder over the years because there are fewer small shops and we have to drive further to find things…”

Now, there’s a thought. It wouldn’t be that much harder in Rhuthun, a town of the independent trader... and we calculate there are still 37 days to Easter Day.

We still have three butchers, even if there’s nothing in town selling groceries full time (Rhuthun Organics, Clwyd Street/Mwrog Street opens Thursdays to Saturdays). There’s an independent chemist and a chain store. Plenty of places to take out a sandwich. Two or three newsagents, plus Bridge Services. Two florists. A delicatessen. Plus two off-licences (useful unless you're giving up alcohol for Lent as well).
