There’s another sector of the local economy that is currently very vibrant, one largely unseen by all but those who need it. It’s an emerging sector not akin to the mobile phone market of five years ago. The entrepreneurs within show tremendous enthusiasm and inventiveness. That’s their stock-in-trade.
We’re talking of multimedia companies offering design, print and especially web solutions plus computer expertise all in one. There are at least three in Rhuthun area, four if you include Pentrellyncwmer, all of which are slightly outrageous.
Take Balloonfish. Its own advertising material is refreshingly different. It’s a firm promising creativity, emphasised by its strapline, “Its (sic) good to be the odd one out” (though it may be odd simply because it’s forgot to place an apostrophe in the word “its”).
Another is Tengo Media. It has some cracking images on its website to tempt you. Driven by similarly young Turks, the managing director’s only 24 (though they do employ someone who is a statesman-like younger Richard Attenborough).
Are you beginning to notice the trend in unusual names? Not just because all the standard ones have no doubt gone but because they appeal to the new type of people. And because they tend to be a young workforce. And because they tend to say, “Look, we’re avant-garde, we’re different”.
A third is the more established Boyns Computers. Like Tengo, as well as web solutions, it offers all IT type solutions, including hard- and soft-ware. Inclusive service, in fact.
Image these days really is everything. That these and companies like them are appearing all over Wales demonstrates their huge appeal to those looking for something flamboyant. And there is still such an untapped pool of local businesses with limited IT experience let alone the knowledge to cut a decent web page.
Once again, there’s no reason to go miles to search for what you want when it’s already on the doorstep. Rhuthun’s got the lot.
