Countdown to 20

The traffic orders for exemptions to the new 20 mph urban speed limits on the nation's trunk roads were published yesterday. What do we know?

Traffic regulation orders posted at Llanbedr. Similar notices but for 30 were posted in2018

1. This currently applies to trunk roads only. Exemptions to the county road network will follow.

2. Exemptions are where the 20 mph will not apply i.e. 30 mph will be retained.

3. The trunk road through Rhuthun/Ruthin is the A494.

4. There are no exemptions in Rhuthun/Ruthin. This means that from the eastern point of entry on the A494 before Ysgol Brynhyfryd & Schola Ruthinensis to the exit point on Lôn Fawr, you're obliged to drive at 20 mph.

5. There is an exemption for much of Llanbedr. The area in pink on the official map retains its 30 mph limit. This means the heart of the village will be reduced to 20 mph and we've added this in red.

The red-and-pink length of road is already painfully slow, at 30 mph. It simply doesn't 'feel' 30. As a result, few stick to the limit and, in fact, most overtake on the eastern stretch of the delimited zone. What chance is there that motorists will bother with 20?

The imposition of 20 mph before and after the junction with the B5429 Llandyrnog road benefits hardly anyone. There are few properties or accesses that front the road and few reasons for pedestrians to cross. That from the entrance of St Peter's Church to Lôn Cae Glas is basically a wall. No one lives there (there is planning permission for more housing, though, above).
