Cost of Living Just Got Costlier

The cost of living just went up even more. Better brace yourselves, as Ruthin Dental Practice sells out.

Letters now sent to NHS patients on Ruthin Dental Practice's books

In the mail today was an invitation to join Ruthin Dental Practice's private practice plan. This is on account of the practice leaving the NHS. We're not surprised but we're also disappointed.

Even under the NHS, the cost of dentistry has shot up. Before the virus, you could see a hygienist for around £40 (itself an increase from £15). Now, this is over £80.

You can take your chance or you can pay the practice a monthly fee. That fee'll cost you more than an apple a day. Oh, and to crown it all, there's a one-off joining fee, as well. That monthly fee then allows you to secure various discounts on most treatments. Hmmm. Have you read the exclusions? Orthodontics, periodontal treatment, implants and cosmetic treatments: in other words, no discount for virtually any work you may require (other than a mercury filling).

We have more dentists here than we've ever had

If you believe the letter, dentistry is in the teeth of a crisis. Ruthin Dental Practice cites the difficulty in attracting NHS dentists, as NHS work is no longer 'an attractive career'. Yet, the board outside suggests there are currently nine dentists at the practice—more than there have ever been. But, it also seems post-virus that some have left and not been replaced. Why would dentists not chose to live and work here? They also blame a 'chronic lack of investment in NHS dentistry'. Apparently, without this change, the practice cannot 'remain a viable business'.

If you're on the NHS, you have till June 30th this year to receive non-private treatment. But if you fancy signing up to the private plan then you have till April 20th to do so and your first payment will be on May 8th. Nice.

If you're not on their books and want to join the practice, you'll have received this unwelcome news already. There's little option.
