Milk is something we tend to take for granted. Like most staples, it's price on the increase. For years, we've bought Co-op skimmed organic in 2 pint containers. These used to be £1.30 but have suddenly shot up to £1.80. For some reason, you cannot purchase four pint containers of organic skimmed in any location in Rhuthun/Ruthun, which means it is already an expensive commodity. Other types of milk come in 4 pint containers.
That 38 per cent increase at the Co-op inevitably results in a change of behaviour. It's time to buy semi-skimmed (in four pint containers, not two) and it has resulted in our shopping around. This is what we found:
Store | Semi-skimmed 4 pt organic | Equivalent per pint | Comment |
Co-op | £2.40 | 60p | Supports Welsh farmers |
Tesco | £2.70 for 2 litres | 77p | Calon Wen (Welsh) |
Aldi | £1.85 | 46p | UK milk |
Compare this to the cost per pint of skimmed organic that was our standard purchase:
Store | Skimmed 2 pt organic | Equivalent per pint | Comment |
Co-op | £1.85 | 93p | Supports Welsh farmers |
Calon Wen is a co-operative of 25 family-owned Welsh farms ✔✔ Aldi's UK milk says it comes from farmers 'with high welfare standards' ✔ Co-op's support Welsh farmers with 'fairer prices' ✔✔
