Opportunity for Rhuthun? Probably Not

Dinbych's HSBC is to close. This will leave that town without a bank. Dinbych's misfortunate may be Rhuthun/Ruthin's salvation, because Rhuthun does not appear to be in included in HSBC's list of 114 closures. Dinbych's MP Dr James Davies is unhappy but he's also powerless. His home town of Prestatyn (15,000 people) is already without a bank.

Part of the official HSBC assessment into Dinbych. The 52 minutes in travel from Dinbych to Rhuthun is somewhat exagerated. It takes half this amount of time by bus over the correctly-shown 7.74 mile journey

Davies states that 'Once the Denbigh branch has gone, those wishing to do in-person banking will have to travel over seven miles to the nearest branch in Ruthin'. This might therefore be good news for Rhuthun but I doubt many will come specifically for banking. It's a bit of an anachronism, isn't it?

But whether we live in Dinbych or Rhuthun, the reduction in all the services we see means we're now so very used to travelling that the closure probably won't matter. Barclay's and Nat West has closed in both towns but, really, has it made much of a difference for the average person?

My own disgruntlement with HSBC will probably add to the inevitable lack of footfall count and has assisted in closing Dinbych's HSBC. I was once a Dinbych as well as Rhuthun branch user but I haven't been in to Dinbych's (or Rhuthun's) for over 2½ years.
