Yesterday's Flower Show was by far the busiest in recent years. Gate receipts were high and car parking much in demand. Still, there were those who moaned about the £5 entrance fee. They have no concept of how much it costs to stage an event such as this.
It was a pleasure to eat again at the Strand Café, with its good service and honest food. Vegetarians beware: this is a farmers' market and there was only one dish of egg, chips and beans suitable for them (and I expect that the chips were fried in animal fat). Livestock markets and vegetarians are just a little incompatible.
In spite of the numbers attending, entrants in the various competitions seemed to reach an all time low. The judges nevertheless still took matters very seriously, with their jackets and ties, posh frocks or, for the food, their starched white overalls. These were their badges of honour.
Lack of hoursepower. The number of cars was small, tractors smaller and as for the lorry category... there was just one entrant
