A Good Show but not Sustainable

The area's truckers really wanted to make a splash this year, having missed last. We saw more trucks—130 in total—than when last they went though (in 2019) and there was much excitement from young and not-so-young. The appalling weather did result in fewer people around & about in town compared to 2019 but there were nevertheless loads of cars parked along the route in any conceivable alleyway, car park, entrance or junction so that their occupants might see the show in the dry.

We noted wagons from north Shropshire, Gwynedd, Conwy, Wrexham and Flintshire and there was reportedly even one from Ireland—plus the expected locals. This really is an event to rival and to top our neighbour Dinbych.

But, given the numbers involved and the distances they travel, is this really the best environmentally sound way of celebrating Christmas? We understand that drivers and owners alike wish to support the venture and that the origins of this was in commemoration of a couple of young Ruthinites who lost their lives on the Lower Denbigh Road. But, no matter the large number involved and their motives, this type of thing really is no longer sustainable.
