Last Orders Last Night

The Conservative Club will closed after last orders yesterday evening. Yes, it was the last day for hospitality venue which, even before coronavirus, has been struggling. It had only reopened in March 2021. Should we be concerned?

For the building, certainly. It's the stone-constructed grade II listed Plas Coch. Its closure will see yet another of our heritage buildings unoccupied and. possibly, in jeopardy. We understand that the owners, the Conservative Association, will market the property but we can only assume this will be for sale rather than rent. This means it could end up as anything, even as a private dwelling or, much worse, flats.

The front plaque on the face of the building states that Plas Coch dates from no less than the 13th century and was gutted in 1400 by Owain Glyndŵr. More likely is the date of refurbishment in 1613 ,as a town house ‘for the constable of Castell Coch’, as it says. In 1963, it became a ‘banqueting hall’ and for a time was in the care of a borough councillor whereafter in 1977 the Conservative Club moved in. They wer previously on Castle Street.

Local historian Gareth Evans believes that Plas Coch is one of Rhuthun/Ruthin's oldest building, older in deed than any other building in Rhuthun save the Castle and possibly the church. who are we to argue? As such, it needs a safe custodian sharpish.

Today, the front elevation looks quite sorry for itself and requires some conservation work.
