Left Hand and Right Hand

There are two sides to the county council's management of green spaces. First, there's the highly laudable proliferation of bee-friendly meadowland. This is to be applauded as something that makes a difference while inconveniencing so few people. There are a number of new sites in and around Rhuthun/Ruthin.

Then there's the deplorable use of herbicides along the fringes of green spaces, at the back of footways and around signage posts. Incongruously and inconceivably, these burnt strips of desiccated and brittle brown are even evident at the fringes of the very bee friendly meadows the county council is trying to establish and protect. A case of left hand/right hand? Or is the county council's new environmental policies simply greenwash? We do not see any evidence of greenwashing.

Before...

One of the issues about the proliferation of bee-friendliness is a lack of consultation. I suppose the thinking is that the county council shouldn't need to consult upon how often if cuts grass. Grass growth is a natural process. But seemingly 'unmanaged' green spaces have taken some people by surprise and those who live around Bryn Rhydd have complained. More than that, the on-site meeting between council officers and residents was reported as a lynch mob. As a result, the mowers were brought out and we have lost that area, one apparently fairly rich in wildlife amid a couple of mature trees. The manicurists won that argument over those who would rather our open spaces are unpolished. Such a shame.

... and after the cut

And it looks as if Bro Deg has also been done for. Not by the council but it's believed by one disgruntled residents who reported rats (there is no evidence of the pests). Someone has taken upon themselves to mow the triangle, leaving it naked. About one third of the open space briefly flourished as wild, now gone. It seems that the road to ecological diversity is sometimes best travelled on the back of a motor mower.
