Arrivederci Arriva—for now

Today, Sunday, and Rhuthun/Ruthin has no bus service. This isn't the first time but it isn't the norm, either.

Yesterday, Saturday, was Arriva's last day of operation to Rhuthun/Ruthin. As part of today's bus service revisions, Arriva will no longer serve our town. This is expected to be a temporary measure while we have lockdown but may actually continue while some of the lockdown is eased. After all, in an item in the news also yesterday, at least 20 per cent of public transport users are saying they will foresake buses and trains even when we are back to whatever normal may look like.

Arriva's service is from Y Rhyl to Wrecsam via Dinbych and Rhuthun. Arriva first withdrew the Rhuthun-Wrecsam leg after last operation on April 4th.

The driver of this particular journey, above, speculated as to whether Arriva would go through to Wrecsam ever again, citing few passengers even in the good times. If that driver is right, Arriva has struggled on the X51 but it has maintained a service since GHA's collapse in July 2016, which is almost four years.

From tomorrow, Monday, there is a slightly more limited service from Rhuthun to Dinbych, connecting with Arriva's service northward to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd and Y Rhyl. That will be Lloyd's Coaches who currently operate the 55 to Corwen, as well.

May I thank those Arriva and all bus drivers who have carried on working during this difficult period. They are key workers providing buses for key workers. Close contact with passengers in an environment where distancing physically is difficult and the exchange of money make bus drivers vulnerable.

On April 14th, Google took the opportunity to thank key workers in the "public transportation" sector. They meant "public transport". This from the Dutch version of Google
