Need for Speed Redefined

How surprised should we be that residents of Llanbedr are "fed up" with motorists exceeding the speed limit?

From the Free Press website today. "Go ahead. Make my day"

What *is* surprising, however, is that only "a quarter of vehicles were travelling over the limit" (according to the Free Press). Darren Millar AM calls these data "alarming".

Just one quarter over the limit. From my own experience, I’d say that it was more likely only a quarter were sticking to the limit… if that.

Has no one considered the real issue here in that the speed limit is wrong in the first place. When in April 2018 the Welsh government imposed 30 mph along the long, straight stretch from the Bwlch road eastwards, it was surely too optimistic. The previous 40 mph limit at this point simply felt "right" (time was, in the last 25 years, when all of Llanbedr was unrestricted).

What we have, in effect, is motorists maintaining their previous speed behaviour along a section of road where they feel that the goalposts have unjustifiably moved... and this contributes to the statistics.

There’s no argument about 30mph through the Tan yr Unto bends and the village crossroads itself.
