Records Smashed

Top Dre continues to astound. The organisers really want to put the event on the Welsh festival scene and each year they move towards that goal.

This was the first year that the festival organisers issued wrist bands. Did you notice they were sponsored by Taylor Wimpey? No? They were. The festival also ran out of these bands at about 4p.m., so popular was this year's Top Dre.

Why did this year's Top Dre smash all records? The promise of hot weather (that didn't come)? Côr Ysgol Penbarras, which brought parents into town? The varied programme which, like last year, was driven by and delivered for younger people? No Route 76 beer buses this year? Managing to book Bryn Fôn a'r Band as the closing act? Above all, Bryn Fôn is always a crowd-puller.

Bryn Fôn. Pink suit. Nice

I am sure that all of these factors were important.

But I also wonder whether there was an extra ingredient. The whole town and especially young people needed a distraction, something to take their mind off things, a release, following the death of Olivia Alkir. Her funeral's today.

I suppose that the organisers faced the dilemma of whether to run or to cancel. Given the feeling in Rhuthun/Ruthin, I think the festival committee made the right decision to run. Master of ceremonies Huw Hilditch Roberts got the mood right at a little after 4p.m. in asking everyone to stand and applaud Miss Alkir's life. It was a thanksgiving and I think a request for a minute's silence would've been too much to expect.

Update: We now know that Top Dre made a staggering £14,000 in £5 donations. The more usual amount is between £6,000-8,000. This smashed record really demonstrates the success of the year's events. So, the festival committee's in the money... but one poor, wet, cold Top Dre can stil wipe 'em out. And to put things into context, Bryn Fôn needed £1,500 to perform.
