Last night, in a secret internal paper vote, town councillors chose a new councillor from the three candidates who put their names forward, following the call for a co-opted new member. The winner was Cllr Oakes. Oakes made an appearance in the public gallery for the first time during the October 2018 meeting. He's unusually young and even more unusually affiliated to the Labour party.

Former mayor Geraint Woolford stood down from the current town council

Of the 15 town councillors, it's interesting and, actually, alarming that we reckon only eight have ever been elected by the people of Rhuthun/Ruthin in a proper ballot. They are councillors Beach, Bryan, Hawkins, Jones, Owen-Ellis, Roberts, Snape and Wynne. These were returned during the 2012 town & community council elections. For similar elections held in 2017, all those standing were returned unopposed (without a vote). Gavin Harris's seat is slightly different: he was one of those returned unopposed in 2017 but he had been previously elected in 2008, though did not stand in 2012.

This means that councillors Allsop-Robson, Wynne Hughes, Lewney, Williams, Wyn and Oakes have never once or ever been elected; and councillor Harris not since 2008. This is a disturbing state of affairs.
