Making Matters Worse?

On Friday, at Four Crosses, cyngor Wrecsam council burnt off carriageway speed limit reminder roundels. On Saturday at 9.30 p.m. there was no further activity. 12 hours later, new speed limit signs had appeared on the A525 and B5430. This, then, is the latest development in the reduction in legal traffic speeds between Rhuthun/Ruthin and Wrecsam.

As of today, approaching Four Crosses traffic lights, where once the limit was reduced to 50, now it is 40, all the way through to the new November 2016 30 mph extension at Lôn Cae Adar, between Four and Five Crosses, whence it becomes 30.

Coming from Wrexham, the nationalspeed limit sign is well after Lôn  Cae Adar. Not only will this tempt impatient drivers to overtake in the 30 zone, it will mean they do so right across the junction. And, yes, I've seen that, thanks (thanks, yellow Å koda Felicia driver for nearly wiping me out.

The new limit also applies for the length of the B5430 from Four Crosses towards the Flintshire border, also previously subject to 50.

Early days but did I spy anyone keeping to the limit? Nope. Well, except when a tractor went through with a healthy queue behind frustrated by traffic in the opposite direction preventing an overtaking manœuvre.

As we have said before, we suspect that the limit will simply be ignored. In fact, we believe that the limit, like those others recently imposed, will result in greater rather than less risk.

In spite of lowering the limit along a length of the A525 at Llandegla, the national speed limit applies at the Denbighshire boundary. How long might that last?
