Christmas Eve Blues

There was a time, even during the lifetime of this blog, when Christmas Eve in Rhuthun/Ruthin was busy. There was a certain urgency about the place. Youngish men would rush in to panic buy for their beloveds. You'd meet people you didn't normally see.

All that's changed.

At 9.30 a.m. today, Rhuthun was hardly awake. A significant number of shops had yet to open at what for many is the universal time of 10.00 a.m., A number would be closed by the afternoon, as Saturday, for some, is half day closing. Even on Christmas Eve, a number had not bothered to open at all. B & M wasn't busy. Not even Siôn Corn managed to set up before 10.00 a.m., with helpers trying to get pickings from the poor turnout. Perhaps this was because Christmas Eve falls on a Saturday.

What, then, might we expect next year, when Christmas Eve will be a Sunday.

At 10.30, though, both the Co-op and Tesco car parks were full. Still very few in town.

Christmas Eve at Mococo and at 9.30 a.m. a shop assistant was removing the window Christmas message

There was a time when I urged Ruthinians to undertake their Christmas shopping solely in Rhuthun. I led by example. But even I must now concede that it's impossible to do so, not for everything. Our tastes and expectations have changed, as have our shopping habits. More to the point, there now simply isn't enough choice in Rhuthun to allow people to buy what we need or want for Christmas. We simply have to travel—whether vicariously via the internet or physically.

And that's all rather sad.
