Will 20 be Plenty?

Today our highways department begins a week's work on Ffordd Yr Wyddgrud/Mold Road, outside Ysgol Brynhyfryd, which will see the installation of the gubbins which will eventually operate a mandatory variable speed limit at school times of 20 mph.

On and off, the community's been pressing for these for, what, 30 years, even though we're not aware of any crashes or causalities outside the school. And, neither are road speeds particularly fast when pupils come and go, owing to the volume of traffic at school times.

Perhaps for these, there's always been a refusal from the Welsh office/Welsh government to step the limit down. The actual reason, however, was simply because the A494 is on a trunk road.

But with new technology, variable limits limits are now springing up outside schools all over the trunk road network. And Rhuthun will be next, although the accompanying traffic orders are, apparently, as yet incomplete, which means the scheme won't go live at the beginning of the next half-term.

It doesn't include the primary schools nearer to Wernfechan because these will relocate. Designed with Ysgol Brynhyfryd in mind, neither is this focused on Ruthin School, which appears to be an indirect beneficiary. One wonders whether the lower 20 mph limit will remain in force till the sixth form at Ruthin School have commuted from Goodman up and back. That could be quite late.

One wonders, too, just how many motorists will comply.
