In Passing—August 2015

I love the smell of Britain's favourite and authentic national dish. Whether I'd like to live with it constantly is another thing. Those people who reside in the vicinity of Crispin Yard have no option. Since the opening of the Ocean Pearl Indian restaurant, each afternoon and evening the waft of curry now constantly seems to pervade the area.

New roadsigns have appeared at the foot and top of Record Street, warning drivers that the road is unsuitable for heavy vehicles. Satnavs can take traffic from the Yr Wyddgrug direction via Record Street towards Corwen.

Upon the closure of City Travel, J's Barber has moved in. As a result, J has vacated her former double premises next door, currently for sale as an investment at £50,000 (shops and basement only). This is the third premises occupied by J's, the first being in Upper Clwyd Street, where she took over from John the Barber and then opened a women's branch next to it. Can't be cheap, all these premises to convert.

On August 19th, none of the three Co-op express tills were working. On 25th, nothing had changed. On 26th, two were working. This didn't last long, as all three were out of action on 28th.  No one within knew much about them or when they might be fixed, other than a perfunctory "it won't be long"—that seemed like guesswork.  It's now becoming a regular occurrence that at least one is down. Also, disappointingly, one of the three (the middle machine) no longer offers the ability to shop and pay yn y Gymraeg.

Vanity Fayre has closed its front rooms but continues to trade from the rear. It opened in 2009. Only recently—this spring, in fact—did Vanity Fayre offer hair styling by Holly as a separate business. Its part-closure leaves a gap on The Square.

There looks to be activity next to the Candy Cabin, Clwyd Street. Judging by the signage, there’s a new proposition opening that is related to or owned by the Candy Cabin itself. It's Pandamonium and our guess is that it's for hire for children's parties. It's difficult to see exactly what's within.

Not noticed the sign that has appeared before, in the window of the Well Street Pharmacy, so unsure how long it's been up. It says "Ban Fracking".

The unsightly site next to Automark on LĂ´n Parcwr has been cleared and a better entrance provided. There are seemingly no footings for any buildings, though, but it does clear another of Rhuthun/Ruthin's eyesores. It's available for sale. The only issue is that in order to improve the site's appearance, the owners have spread what appears to he bitumen road tailings (beyond the new fencing, above). Given the nature of what appears to be contaminated waste, is this actually legal?

Awel Home Care & Support has premises towards the back of the Farmers Arms and Dragon Tyres, accessed via the alley between the both. Its address is actually at the Farmers. This sign off Mwrog Street is a recent addition. Awel says that it is a provider of "superior, flexible and tailored domiciliary care and support".

Tenovus has opened for its usual week of charity shop trading, in the former Artefacts.

No. 6 Highlands, Llanbedr, high above the Vale and even above the Clwyd Gate Inn, has sold at last. It's been on the market, like, forever. The asking price for this two bed/two reception semi-detached bungalow was £145,000. We suspect it went for significantly less.

At close of business on Sunday August 30th, and bank holiday Monday to go, Ruthin DĂ©cor had raised over £200 for the Welsh Air Ambulance. For £1 a go, you could humiliate yourself on the grad prix circuit chalked out on the store's frontage. It started on Friday and Saturday was the busiest day. As at 4 p.m. yesterday, the fastest lap time was an incredible 16 seconds. Having watched but not partaken, I can assure readers it was nowhere near as easy as it looked.

Parts of Rhuthun/Ruthin woke up on August 26th to find they had no water or low water pressure. For some, this meant enough water to boil a kettle but nothing else. This was the result of a burst pipe at Llanrrhydd and it affected the water supply across much of eastern Rhuthun, the town centre and even parts of Llanfwrog Urban.

This was on top of an interruption in some parts on 25th. This was much more local in natural and was associated with the water connection works at present on Mold Road that began on August 24th and is due to last this week.
